Using WS FTP LE
You are
allowed up to 2 megs space FREE of charge.
The free space is for intended for personal non-business
use only.
Riverside
reserves the right to remove untasteful or illegal
activities.
The first step in
getting your own personal website is to write the page.
There are literally hundreds of programs, books, and
websites written that will assist you at this. Try
entering "HTML" in any Search Engine (Yahoo,
Excite, Lycos, Infoseek, etc.). Once you get the hang of
HTML, you can even write it in Notepad if you wish. Or
you can use programs such as FrontPage, FrontPage
Express, MS Word, MS Publisher, and Netscape Composer.
After you have your webpage written, it must be installed
on Riversides webserver. First, you must let us know that
you want to put your page online. Call us at 652-2562 or
email personal_website@mail.riverview.net We can then set up an account on
the server so that you can transfer the files directly to
it. You will be using a special program called FTP. It is
used to transfer files between computers across the
Internet. Your Internet logon name and password will be used to gain access to Riverside's
server.
Getting
and installing WS_FTP
WS_FTP is a
FTP Program. FTP is an acronym for File Transfer
Protocol. WS_FTP can be downloaded by clicking here 646KB. This is the latest version of WS_FTP. We
recommend WS_FTP32 because we are familiar with it. We
may not be familiar enough with other FTP programs to
provide technical support on them. Upon running the
downloaded file, it will install itself and create a
Shortcut in the Start-Programs Menu.
Connecting
and Uploading Files to Riverside's Server
This is
what you'll see when you fire up WS_FTP. The first thing
we want to do is hit the New button.

Now you
should see this screen.
Enter Riverview
in the Profile Name box.
Enter home.riverview.net in the Hostname-Address
box.
Now enter your dial-up username and password.
When done filling in all of the information click on the StartUp
tab.

Now that
you've clicked the StartUp tab, you should see
this screen. In the box underneath Initial Local
Directory enter C:\webpages or whatever you
named the directory on your computer where you
keep your webpages. Now click OK and it will
connect to Riverside's web server. It may ask you to
re-enter your password before completing the connection.

Now we see
this window. The left half of the screen shows files on
your computer and the right side shows files in your
directory on Riverside's web server. These are the most
common actions:
Uploading Files: Highlight a filename in the left side
window and press the arrow button that points to the
right. Once the file has finished uploading it will
appear in the right side window. Once a file has been
uploaded it can be viewed by people on the Internet.
Downloading Files: Highlight a filename in the right
side window and press the arrow button that points to the
left. You can use FTP to download your files, edit them,
and then upload them back to Riverside's server.
Renaming Files: Highlight a filename in either of the side
windows and press the Rename button. Then enter in
the new filename. A common use for this is to rename your
home page to index.html. If some enters your web
address in thier browser, http://home.riverview.net/your_directory_name,
Riverside's Web server will only automatically load your
webpage if it is named index.html. If there aren't
any files in your directory named index.html, your
visitors will only see a directory listing that shows all
of the filenames of the files that are in your directory.
Deleting Files: Highlight a filename in either of the side
windows and press the Delete button to delete
files from your computer or your directory on Riverside's
Server. BE CAREFUL!! ONCE FILES ARE DELETED THEY
ARE GONE FOR GOOD!!
When
you're done point your browser to http://home.riverview.net/your_website_name and check out your work!
